The new website is an online version of our gorgeous gift shop in Mickleover. The Alphabet Gift Shop website will act as a sister site to our existing children’s website Little Lazy.

From the 1st to 14th February every customer is guaranteed to receive a discount off their purchases every time they shop.

The Lottery of Love will open on Wednesday 1st February and for every purchase you make in either The Alphabet Gift Shop or at Alphabet Interiors (behind Burnaston Garage) you will be asked to choose a Lottery of Love ticket.  Every ticket will have a percentage amount that will be discounted from the total of your purchases.

It could be any amount of discount up to a maximum of 50% and on Valentine’s Day itself there will be one very special 100% discount ticket – which would mean FREE shopping for the lucky winner!

Love is in the air and everyone’s a winner on the Lottery of Love!

The lovely Jill has been baking up some delicious dishes and has kindly offered to share her fab recipe for carrot cake.

Jill’s fab carrot cake, needless to say there was no cake left after this photo!

Ingredients for the cake:

  • 250ml/ 9 fluid oz vegetable oil.
  • 4 room temperature eggs, beaten.
  • 225g/ 8oz soft light brown sugar.
  • 140g/ 5oz carrots, peeled and finely grated.
  • 225g/ 8oz self raising flour.
  • ½ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda.
  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon.
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger.
  • 140g/ 5oz walnuts, chopped.

Ingredients for the icing:

  • 45g/ 1 ½ oz unsalted butter, softened.
  • 170g/ 6oz good quality full fat cream cheese.
  • 300g/ 10 ½ oz icing sugar.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence.
  • lemon juice to taste.
  • 8 walnut halves for decoration.

Method:

1.       Heat the oven to 180 degrees C/ 350 degrees F/ gas mark 4.

2.       Line two 20cm/ 8inch sandwich tins with baking parchment.

3.       In a bowl stir together the oil, eggs, sugar and carrots.

4.       Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda, cinnamon and ginger into a large bowl.

5.       Fold the mixtures together then fold in the walnuts.

6.       Divide the mixture between the two tins and bake in the centre of the oven for 25 minutes or until the cake springs back when pressed lightly in the centre.

7.       Cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes in the tin, then turn out and cool completely.

8.       To make the icing, beat the butter and cream cheese together until smooth. Sift the icing sugar over the top and stir in. Flavour with vanilla and lemon juice.

9.       Use the icing to fill the cake and ice the top and decorate with the walnut halves if desired.

Obviously much time and effort was put in to taste testing everything – all in the name of market research (The diet is definitely on hold again!) Scarves, jewellery, signs and pictures were our best sellers of the weekend along with cuddly toys, personalised rag dolls and baby blankets.  Can’t wait for the Christmas Fair! (Note to self – wear more comfortable shoes next time!)
